The end of WWII brought profound happiness to the hearts of the people whose lives were affected by the war. Hitler had committed suicide, and the cruel horrors of the Holocaust were finally over. Though Europe was tired of fighting, a new conflict soon spread farther from Europe, to affect the whole world. The Soviet Union and the United States went head to head, in a silent struggle over political difference, mainly the spread of communism. From 1945 till the collapse of the U. S. S. R. , the United States and Europe sought various methods to stop the spread of Soviet Communism. From containment to brinkmanship, to the Truman Doctrine and NATO, Detente had the overall best effect to stop the Cold War. Although Detente crumbled, it helped bring an end to the Cold War. Soon after the United States interfered with the spread of communism in Vietnam, the country faced many internal conflicts that eventually led them to seek out Detente. Detente first appeared as an idea by President Richard Nixon, which would help calm the Cold War. Dealing with other nations in a flexible manner was a concept of Detente, and was used in Europe, by the West German Chancellor, Willy Brandt. Brandt visited Poland’s Warsaw Ghetto and asked for forgiveness of what Germany had done under Hitler’s control during WWII. This act of peace ultimately changed the hearts of the European countries and the United States. After this act, West Germany signed treaties with the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia that affirmed state boundaries in return for the use of no force. Both of these acts turned the tides of the Cold War. The countries of Europe finally realized that there was no use participating in a war that never even started. Another major key concept of Detente was to calm things down, not only with the Soviet Union, but with other nations as well. President Nixon put this into practice by becoming the first U. S. president to visit Communist China. Nixon also paid many visits to the Soviet Union and came up with the SALT 1 treaty, which limited the number of missiles and arms a country could have. These visits calmed down tensions and made people believe that the Cold War would soon come to an end. Although Cold War tensions were finally calmed down, problems aroused that threatened peace. In June 1972, spies broke into the Democratic Party headquarters under President Nixon’s command, trying to retrieve government documents. Nixon was caught, and forced to resign. After this incident, Congress did not authorize U. S. help in Vietnam, after North Vietnam launched an attack on South Vietnam. North Vietnam successfully took over the south and united them under a communist dictatorship. These events turned the tides of Detente, and ultimately led to its crumble. The United States was dealing with their own crisis, and the last thing they wanted to deal with was foreign affairs. Although Detente was over, it went on to greatly effect how countries would deal with the Cold War. Although Detente ended before seeing any real progress, it ultimately succeeded in the long run. Detente was different from other methods because it did not ignore problems or simply let them happen. Under Detente, countries made treaties and conferences that ultimately put a face to the Cold War. By using Detente, tensions between communist and noncommunist countries calmed down and in the future disappeared along with the Soviet Union. The Cold War, although silent, had a great affect on countries after the Second World War. The United States and many other countries tired various methods to try to stop the spread of Communism. Out of all those methods, Detente ultimately had the greatest effect on stopping Cold War conflicts. Although detente crumbled, it influenced how communist countries treated other noncommunist countries. By changing relationships between countries, calming Cold War tensions, detente helped bring the Cold War to an end. This policy not only wanted to calm down tensions, and end the Cold War, but it sought out something that Europe and the whole world needed the most, real lasting peace.

Which States Require the ACT Full List and Advice SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Over the past five years, the number of states that administer the ACT statewide has more than doubled: there are now 12 states that require every junior to take the test and eight more that either require the test in some districts or offer it as a free option for students who wish to take it. This post explains why these programs exist, which states have them, and how you can take advantage of them if you live in one of these states. Why Do Some States Require the ACT? In 2001, when states were first implementing statewide assessment programs, Illinois and Colorado decided that, rather than creating their own tests for high school juniors, they would contract with ACT, Inc. to use the ACT as a statewide assessment. (The ACT is generally considered more content based than the SAT, and therefore a better for for assessments.) This plan had the added advantages of providing every student with the chance to take a college admissions test and, ideally, encouraging students who might not have otherwise considered college to apply. Colorado and Illinois were followed by Kentucky, Wyoming, and Michigan in 2007 and then North Dakota and Tennessee in 2009 (although Colorado, Illinois, and Michigan have since switched to the SAT). Since then, the number of states using the ACT as a statewide assessment has almost doubled, and the SAT has created an equivalent program called SAT School Day. The spread of the ACT as a state assessment helped it surpass the SAT as the most popular college admissions test in the US 2011-2017 (although recently it's been overtaken by the SAT once more). For the 2019-2020 school year, 20 states have a contract with ACT, Inc. to provide free ACT testing to some or all high school juniors at public schools. Which States Require the ACT? Of the 12 states that administer the ACT statewide, more than half include the writing (the rest do not). There are also a few states that don't require the test of all students but allow districts to opt in to the program or give students the choice of which test to take. The short answer is that it doesn’t make a huge difference: the ACT is the same whether you take it on a state-administered date or one of the regular test days. However, if you do live in one of the states listed above, you may want to tweak your approach to take advantage of some of the state resources available to you. Here are a few things to keep in mind. You'll Be Able to Take the Test for Free If the cost of taking the ACT is a financial burden for your family, the opportunity to take the test for free is a valuable one, and you should take advantage by scheduling your studying accordingly. Remember that you'll also be able to send four free score reports. You may also be eligible for a fee waiver, thus giving you the chance to take the test up to 3 times for free. You Might Practice for the ACT in School Because the statewide ACTs can double as an assessment for schools and teachers, you may do some in-class preparation for the test. This instruction can help make you more familiar with the test, which is a key step in preparing for the ACT. High school teachers aren't always the most knowledgeable about the ACT, however, so if a teacher tells you something about the test that seems off or contradicts what you've learned in your prep, make sure to double check it! There Could Be Other Free Prep Materials or Classes Available to You Even if your school doesn't offer in-class ACT prep there might be other resources you can take advantage of like free prep books or after school classes. The Curve Won't Be Affected One key thing that won't be affected by whether your state offers free ACT testing is the score curve. Many students believe that the curve is easier on state-mandated test dates because more low-scoring students take the test. The advantages of a computer aided system are that there is a lot of disk space to store writing power points or pictures. The disadvantages are that it is more expensive to run and you have to take longer to make. Objectives My objectives are that I will use computer presentation software and in it there will be: 1. a smart simple font 2. bright colours 3. many different colours 4. short words 5. animation between slides 6. sounds between slides` Analysis Software and hardware. For this dilemma, I will be using computer presentation software. The most suitable software that I can use is Microsoft PowerPoint. I will be using PowerPoint, because it is designed for creating a power point and that is what I need to make. With this software I will be able to make action buttons, allowing the students to look at the presentation quickly, like an interactive word booklet, also in power point I can use logos, pictures and symbols etc, a weakness of a PowerPoint is that as it is saved onto a computer I could be deleted or not saved properly or the computer may crash and would lose all my work. To find research I will be using different software, such as the Internet. I will use the Internet to gather useful information on networks so it will help year seven and me and networks. I will then be able to use a look at my work using a program called Spelling and grammar check so if I spell a word wrong it will change the word to the correct spelling for me. I can use a thesaurus which can put in and take out better words to make it more detailed to make more interesting for year seven. I will use my memory stick to transfer information between my house and school, this is good because it is very simple to use and it is easy to save and it will save me a lot of time. I would also be using a multimedia Projector. This piece of hardware is useful because it will allow me to project my presentation onto a smart board; the students will have an extremely large and clear view of the presentation I have made for them. When I have made my presentation, my user, Miss McKay will be able to show my presentation to year seven using this piece of hardware. Another piece of hardware I will be using is a printer. A printer will be useful to print out pictures of the screen, which will help year seven to understand networks. I would keep one print out for the final copy of my presentation, so I will have a hard copy of the answer to the problem at hand. Inputs For this part of the coursework I will be putting useful information such as text to explain what is happening in the area around the text that I have wrote. Beside the text I will put in graphics/ pictures of relevant pictures to go with the text, so it will be easy for my target audience (year seven). Thought out the presentation I will be using the same font so my target audience will get use to the same font. Also in the presentation I will be using the same font size. All the writing I do I will be using a keyboard as the input for the txt in my presentation. Another input I will use is the Internet, which I can use for gathering information and picture to make my PowerPoint more interesting for year seven. Graphics/pictures and either copy and paste them into my presentation, or import them. Because the Internet is so vast, I will be able to find the right graphics for any of my pages. I will also find useful graphics/pictures from clip art: I will use also information that I have gathers from pervious years where I have been learning information that I need to use now. The graphics/pictures will be imported from a range of sources. The first source that I will use is the Internet.

My Miracle :: Personal Narrative Writing

My Miracle "Dad, I need to go to Hailey's to borrow a shirt for school tomorrow," I shouted from the back room. It had been a hard week for me. My cheerleading squad was preparing for a performance, and we had been practicing before and after school. While I waited for an answer from my dad, the game show, "Who Wants to be a Millionaire," sounded in the background. "Dad, I am going to run to Hailey's real quick," I repeated my shout. A reply came: "It's snowing pretty hard, wait for my show to end and I will take you. I am on my way to the store anyway." I looked out the window to see snow coming down pretty heavy. On any other day, I would have argued to leave right away, but for some reason I didn't argue. Ten or fifteen minutes later, however, I decided I really needed to go. I said, "Mom just take me, I have a lot of stuff to do tonight." My mom said she didn't want to drive on the bad roads. "Wait for your dad," she told me. So I waited. Finally, the show ended and we were on our way out the door. The roads were slippery and the snow was coming down hard. I looked out the windows of the car and in my mind, I heard my mom reminding me to slide the seat away from the dashboard. I chuckled to myself that a seventeen-year old would be too small to sit with an airbag, but I was. As I slid the seat back, my dad asked, "Cara is your seat belt on?" I fastened my seat belt and stared at the snow. It was a peaceful night; it felt quiet and serene. It felt good to have a few minutes of alone time with my dad. We were lost in conversation, and before I knew it we were in front of Hailey's house. I ran in and waved goodbye to my dad. I found the shirt I wanted, and played a game with Hailey and her sisters while we waited for my dad. We joked about my mismatching outfit that consisted of doctor scrubs, a football sweatshirt, and snow boots. While we were laughing, I noticed the headlights in the driveway and hurried out. I excitedly explained the game we had played to my dad as we drove away from Hailey's house.
